Job Description
PURPOSE OF ROLE
To ensure that all organisational, project, and site activities are conducted safely, compliantly, and in alignment with legislative, client, and nuclear regulatory requirements. The Safety Officer proactively supports injury prevention, regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System across all assigned sites and projects.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Legal & Regulatory Compliance
- Monitor compliance with OHSA, Construction Regulations, Eskom Safety Rules, and nuclear site requirements.
- Conduct daily site inspections to identify legal non-conformances.
- Verify permits, risk assessments, and method statements are legally compliant.
- Track legislative changes and communicate impacts to management.
- Maintain up-to-date statutory registers and compliance records.
Site Safety Monitoring & Inspections
- Perform routine site safety walkdowns and observations.
- Identify unsafe acts and conditions, and issue corrective actions.
- Stop unsafe work where an immediate risk is identified.
- Verify implementation of approved safety plans and procedures.
- Engage with workers daily to reinforce safety awareness.
Incident, NCR & Risk Management
- Record, investigate, and report incidents and near misses.
- Manage the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) process through to closure.
- Conduct root cause analysis and recommend preventative actions.
- Maintain incident, deviation, and corrective action registers.
- Monitor the effectiveness of corrective and preventative measures.
Contractor & Stakeholder Safety Management
- Review contractor safety files prior to site access.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance with site and client requirements.
- Conduct contractor safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Liaise with Eskom, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
- Support audits, inspections, and client safety reviews.
Reporting, Auditing & Continuous Improvement
- Compile daily, weekly, and monthly safety performance reports.
- Participate in internal and external SHEQ audits.
- Track safety KPIs, trends, and leading indicators.
- Recommend improvements to safety procedures and systems.
- Ensure accurate document control and record retention.
QUALIFICATION
- Certificate or Diploma in Safety Management / Occupational Health & Safety.
- SHEQ Systems Auditing qualification (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 / OHSAS 18001).
- Valid site safety certifications as required (e.g. nuclear or high-risk site induction).
- Registration with a recognised safety professional body (e.g. SACPCMP) (REQUIRED)
- Membership of a relevant SHEQ or occupational safety institute is advantageous.
- Valid driver’s licence required.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Safety Officer or similar SHEQ role.
- At least 1 year of auditing or inspection experience.
- Experience in construction, industrial, or regulated environments (nuclear preferred).
- Proven experience in report writing, inspections, and contractor management.
